Football Stadium Cake- Video Tutorial
In this free cake video I'm going to show you how to make a Football Stadium Cake! This cake is perfect for game day parties, football themed birthdays, and more!
We are going to be creating our football stadium from two sheet cakes.
I have to say—as someone who tries to avoid measuring whenever possible….making the lines on the football field was NOT a fun time!
Soccer fields are more my speed :0) — If you aren’t comfortable with piping lines, you can also extrude thin strands of white fondant instead and place on the cake.

Notes for our football stadium cake
In the cake video, I am using two ⅓ sheet layers of white almond sour cream cake for our football field and stadium. The Durable Cake for Carving (yellow/white cakes) would be great for this also. You’ll need sprinkles or other small candy for the crowd.
I used a 24″x24″ cake base made from a ½″ thick square of wood ( had it cut at Lowe’s for about $5). This was nice and sturdy which is a must for such a large, heavy cake (as a bend in the base would have caused the crusted icing on the cake to crack).
I also used gum paste for my little score board, and fondant as a base for the edible images that I used on the field (so the green color wouldn’t bleed through the images).
My goal posts are made from white pipe cleaners wrapped in stitch witchery, but an even easier option is to just buy the football goal/players set at a party supply store. That just about sums everything up! ENJOY, and Go Heels! :0)
Sports ball cakes
We don't have many sports themed cake tutorials but we do have a Soccer Ball Cake. The soccer ball cake tutorial will show you how to create a perfectly round cake, which we then decorated like a soccer ball. However, you can easily change up the design of the cake for other types of sports balls.
Have you made this? We would LOVE for you to leave a ⭐️ rating as well as a comment and photo below! We really appreciate your feedback!

Asome cake!! Can't wait to try this on my football fans. I did not quite understand the cutting angle of the stands. Did you place the knife at an angle and cut or was it cut straight across?
i'm making this cake this week! I do have a question- I have a 12X18 pan. If i were to use the durable chocolate cake recipe-- should I double the recipe to fit this pan? Also, for the stand cake I was going to use the white almond- do you double that recipe to fit the pan also? How much butter cream (of each type you use) should I make for this cake? Is the field just dyed green butter cream?
I need this cake for Saturday- do you think I would be okay to make it Wednesday and have it iced Thursday and keep it in the fridge? Or should I make it Thursday and ice it Friday night! I'm thinking the Thursday/Friday would probably be best.
Could you use fishing wire to cut the diagonal in the cakes?
Thank you so much for your help :)
also- how long should you freeze the cake for before you cut the stands!
Hi mlcst11, yes, I would double the recipes for both. The football field is buttercream that is dyed green. I'm not sure how much buttercream we used. We freeze our buttercream in containers and take out as needed. I think you would need at least 3 recipes of whichever recipe you use. You could make your cakes today and freeze, well wrapped in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, if you want to. Your schedule of making it on Wed. would be fine also, frosting and decorating Thurs. and Fri. The frosting on the cake helps to preserve freshness. This cake is time consuming with all the carving and putting the lines and numbers on the field. We haven't tried using fishing wire to cut the diagonal on the cake but it should work. I think it would be hard to do with it partially frozen.....but if it is just let it thaw a bit. Probably if you freeze the layer about 1 hour it would be partially frozen for cutting.
Good luck with your cake.
Hi Bebe and Melissa!!
First of all I would like to thank you both for the excellent website, cake school, tutorials etc…. I have truly taken my cakes to the next level with your teachings!
The only question I have is:
After you cut your cake base (at Lowes) what do you cover it with?
Hi Diana, we almost always cover our wooden bases with a plastic tablecloth. We buy them from Party City, if you have one near you. When using the white ones we need to double cover so you can't see through. The plastic can be pulled very tightly for a nice smooth surface. Taping on wood can be a problem so you will need a strong tape such as duct tape. I'm not positive but I think Melissa shows this in the video Covering a Cake Base, found under Decorating Basics. Thank you for you nice comments about the site.
Thanks BeBe!
I will check that out!
BTW.....we need to see you on the camera too! I bet you are cute as a button! :)
Does anyone know how well this travels with the "people" in the staduim? Do they fall out allover the field?
Hi Colleen-- If your icing has really crusted over before adding your sprinkles, you'll want to add just a thin layer of fresh buttercream so that your sprinkles will really cling to it. Just gently press them into the buttercream and they will stay. The loose ones can be dusted off before transferring to the final cake base. Hope this helps!
Thank you.
Melissa,
I hate to ask, but I need help on pricing a cake like this. I know its the basic cake recipe and buttercream, but I know that its going to be time consuming. I always underprice my cakes and don't want to do this. I hope you can help, I have someone interested in a cake like this....but I am not sure I want to do it unless I can charge for my time.
Thank you!
Hi Angela, in our area we would charge no less than $200 - $250. for this cake. I would say it will take 3 times longer to complete than a standard cake. Putting in the lines and numbers on the football field is very time consuming and all the other details plus a larger cake base is necessary, we used a plywood board. So, yes, definitely charge for the extra time it will take. I think you should call a bakery in your area to find out their pricing.
Good Luck
