Sweet Baby Bassinet Cake- Video Tutorial
In this cake tutorial, I'll show you how to create a SWEET baby bassinet cake topper as well as delicate eyelet accents for your baby shower cakes!
No matter how simple a cake may be, a cake topper adds instant personality..and in this case, our bassinet topper brings a dose of adorable as well as elegance.
We love how it came out! I also demonstrate another simple favorite of mine, eyelet! It's the perfect accent for your spring and summer cakes (and very simple to create too!)
Our video is split into two parts:
PART ONE: Learn to create a beautiful bassinet!
PART TWO: Watch as we create the little baby for the bassinet, as well as a piped eyelet effect.
Table of Contents

So sweet and beautiful! Thank you!
I read on some of the forums that the new Wilton fondant is softer and so Liz's combo of Wilton's and mmf is softer so maybe humidity wasn't the only issue? I have not made her fondant yet (have too much other stuff to use up first) but I do plan to as even though some say it is softer it still is their preferred fondant to use.
Oh my sweet heavens Melissa and Bebe!!! This is perfect! Now to decide which baby carriage to make. I was watching your first baby carriage video the other day and bought a 4 inch circle styro foam ball to make that topper. Now that I saw this video I want to do this one. So much easier I think than using the wires. I love love it!!!!!!
Thank you for your comments!! @Ellen, I had the same thought about the softness of the LMF, but Mom made that batch & said it was not with the new Wilton formula. So, I'm going to blame it on the rain ;0)! Glad that you liked the video!
@Yaneri-- So happy that you liked it! Let us know how it goes!
How can I see the baby bassinet video?? Please a to make it
Hi Rosa, I'm sorry about that- we updated our video player and this one must have fallen through the cracks. You should be all set now!
Great tutorial. Very cute cake. Love the added Teddy.
As a side; you can pre-make plaques and keep the curved shape. I do this all the time to make decorating day a little quicker and easier.
I have a cake dummy for the size of cake I'll be using the plaque on. I use straight pins and pin a piece of parchment onto my dummy larger than my plaque. Make sure its flat and tight. Rub the parchment with a very thin layer of shortening . You can either build your plaque on the dummy or make it on the counter then place it carefully on the dummy when done ( I make mine on the counter). The shortening will keep it in place. I place it in a dark place to dry overnight or longer (usually in my pot drawers). Then when you are ready to put it on the cake very carefully lean the dummy on it's edge remove the pins and it will slide right off and it will have the correct curve to fit perfectly onto your cake. I do this all the time, works great, saves time, love it.
Hope that makes sense. And maybe it will help others.
That's a good point, Teri! What would we do without our dummies? Thanks for sharing this tip! ;0)
What a sweet, adorable cake! I love the look of eyelet. Many thanks again, to you and Bebe, for all you do. =)
I too don't know which to make the carriage or the bassinet, both are so cute. Do you think if I made the bassinet I could ,use the baby mold that we see so often?
Thank you!!
@Margaret~ Yes, I think that would be very sweet. When molding the rice cereal treats as you are establishing the length and width of the bassinet, I would just place the baby on top to make sure that the proportions look right. If necessary you could easily make the bassinet slightly larger.
Cuteness overload! My youngest daughter is expecting in October, and I am team GIRL! Have to show her this... But first, we have to get thru her wedding coming up this weekend!
Melissa this is just adorable! I've never worked with fondant before but I'd like to make this for my nieces baby shower in August. If I make it now will it still be okay to use in August? If so how should I store it? Thank you!!
@Brenda--I missed your nice comment earlier, thanks so much! xo
@Kim~ So glad that you are making this! Yes, you can definitely make in advance. I store my gum paste or fondant pieces in any sort of container that can breathe-- a little bakery box would be fine. You'll also want to keep it away from sunlight or florescent light, which can fade your colors. (I actually was just looking at the bassinet from this tutorial today--it has found it's way to a little shelf in Mom's dining room --still looks good...but the pink has faded from being near a window!) We haven't been able to part with it yet ;0)
Hi Melissa, Is that a typo per chance- 44gms of fondant to cover 2 tiers, etc? That is the size of a golf ball- unless Liz Marek's fondant is that much lighter than Wilton, being marshmallow, but it still has Wilton in it.
If so, I am going to make her fondant right away. Thank you. In process of making this adorable cake and topper on a dummy cake.
